Qbox: QuickBooks Errors Opening Company File

QboxLogo_For_Articles

Please note that Qbox simply shares files between users and will not cause an error when opening QuickBooks company files. You can look up any QuickBooks error and the solution at the Intuit QuickBooks support website. For your convenience, we have listed some of the more common QuickBooks errors our users experience and a quick way to fix them:

Trouble signing into the file once opened:

If you have opened a company file from the Qbox Client/Explorer and QuickBooks is asking you for login credentials in a QuickBooks window, you are having an issue logging in to the file. You will need to ensure you are entering the correct username and password associated with that specific QuickBooks company file. Qbox will not affect QuickBooks usernames and passwords. If you have forgotten your password, QuickBooks provides a link on the login window that you can use to reset your password. Please contact Intuit QuickBooks support for further assistance with this issue.

QuickBooks error code: 8007xxxx

  1. Make sure that you have installed the most recent QuickBooks Desktop program updates released by Intuit. Usually, QuickBooks will remind you to install these updates when the program starts up. If there is an error installing updates, try starting the QuickBooks application by right-clicking on the QuickBooks desktop shortcut and selecting the ‘Run as administrator’ option.
  2. You may also get this error if the company file has been upgraded to a later version year of QuickBooks and you are trying to open it in an earlier version. In this case, you will need to get the same QuickBooks version year to open and work on the file.

If you are unsure of the cause of the error, attempt to open the file directly from QuickBooks, rather than from the Qbox Client/Explorer. See instructions below.

  1. Start the QuickBooks Desktop application by itself. If you are prompted to log into a file, click ‘Cancel’. If a file opens automatically, select ‘File’ and ‘Close Company’.
  2. Select ‘Open or Restore an existing company’, then navigate to the Qbox Sync folder where the file is stored (the path is shown at the top of the Qbox Client/Explorer) and select the file you would like to open.

You should get a prompt for the file lock even when you open the file from the QuickBooks application if you have opened a file located in your Qbox folder. If the file opens correctly and you get a lock prompt, this only needs to be done once, and going forward you can continue to open the file from the Qbox Client/Explorer.

If the file did not open successfully, you probably received another error code/message that may be more specific. Please continue reading for more information on these specific error codes.

QuickBooks error code: 6123, 0

If you receive this error when attempting to open a company file, please try to open the file directly from QuickBooks (it may take 2-3 attempts).

If the file did not open successfully and you receive the same error code, please try again. It may take 2-3 times for QuickBooks to open the file correctly. Once it does, you will be able to open the file from the Qbox Client/Explorer as before. You may also check if your Qbox folder is being synced by another syncing service; please see the following set of error codes for instructions.

QuickBooks error code: ‘-6190, -816’ or ‘-6189, -816’

If you receive either of these error codes when attempting to open a company file, it is likely that your Qbox folder is being synced by another syncing service. Common backup and sync services include OneDrive, Google Drive, Google Backup and Sync, Dropbox, Carbonite, and Windows Sync Center. You may attempt to add the Qbox folder (the folder location is shown near the top of the Qbox Client/Explorer window) as an exception to the syncing or backup service so that it will stop syncing the Qbox folder. If you are unable to exclude the Qbox folder from being synced by another service, try relocating the Qbox folder by selecting ‘Preferences’ in the Qbox Client/Explorer window, then clicking ‘Move Qbox Location’. We recommend the following location: C:\Users\[username]\Qbox. If you can't move your Qbox folder location because you are in MU mode, please contact us.

QuickBooks error code: Other 6xxx, XX errors

This error may occur if the company file is located on a network drive. To confirm, copy the company file to a different location (such as your desktop on your C: drive) and open it in QuickBooks. If it opens without error, you can relocate your Qbox folder to this location by selecting ‘Preferences’ on the Qbox Client/Explorer, and ‘Move Qbox Location’.

If you have Windows running on a Mac with virtualization software like Parallels, VMware, etc. you may get this error if the Qbox folder is located on a virtual drive. Try relocating the Qbox folder to the C: drive (usually C:\Users\[username]\Documents) to see if it resolves the issue. To relocate the Qbox folder, select ‘Preferences’ on the Qbox Client/Explorer and click ‘Move Qbox Location’. Qbox will ask you to select a new location. Once selected, it will restart to sync all the folders and files to the new location.

QuickBooks stops working while trying to open a file

This may be because QuickBooks' access to the Company file is not reliable. The issue could be due to an unreliable network, network drive, or Windows running on a virtual environment. You can try relocating the Qbox folder by selecting ‘Preferences’ on the Qbox Explorer, and ‘Move Qbox Location’ to resolve the issue.
